After Hurricane Melissa: A Call for Jamaica’s Stars to Stand Up for Their Fans

In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, Jamaica is reeling. Entire communities have been left in ruins, homes flattened, roads destroyed, and countless families displaced. From Portland to Clarendon, Kingston to St. Mary, the island carries the deep scars of one of the most devastating storms in recent memory. Yet even as the rain subsides and the floodwaters begin to recede, one truth remains clear — Jamaica’s greatest strength has always been its people. And right now, those people need help more than ever. This is a call, not to the government or to politicians, but to the sons and daughters of Jamaica who have risen to fame and fortune. To the entertainers, influencers, athletes, and public figures — both at home and abroad — the time has come to stand up for your fans. When Britain Ditches Decorum: Paul Candler Runs from Anguilla Officials in London

Paul Candler Commissioner for the British Antarctic Territory and British Indian Ocean Territory.

By Tracyann Dunkley | Politics Watch

They call him Paul Candler, former Director of Overseas Territories and one-time Acting Governor of Anguilla — a man who was once received with open arms and deep respect on the island. But in a shocking turn, reports now suggest that Candler, here in the United Kingdom, literally avoided and ran from Anguilla Government officials, Hayden Hughes and Dr. Ellis Webster, refusing even basic engagement. The same man who once represented Britain’s authority in Anguilla, championed as a friend and ally, suddenly turned his back when it came to accountability on home soil.

Hon. Haydn Hughes Opposition Member of The House of Assembly Anguilla.

This isn’t merely a matter of bad manners — it’s a glaring metaphor for Britain’s relationship with its Overseas Territories. When the BOTs are useful, they’re paraded as part of the “British family.” When they ask to be heard, they’re treated as inconvenient guests.

Dr. Ellis Lorenzo Webster Former Premier Of Anguilla 2020 - 2025 and Ent Doctor

Candler’s apparent evasion of Anguillan representatives in London embodies that hypocrisy: the UK’s willingness to enjoy the prestige of ownership without any of the responsibility that should accompany it.

If Britain truly respected these territories, officials like Candler would face scrutiny for such behaviour. But instead, this silence speaks volumes. The message seems clear — the BOTs matter only when Britain needs them. When the tables turn, when questions are asked, and when accountability is due, the very officials meant to uphold British dignity are the first to run.

So, Paul — Anguilla once welcomed you warmly, treated you with dignity, and trusted you to honour that same respect in return. To see you turn away from Anguilla’s representatives on British soil is more than disappointing; it’s a betrayal of the mutual respect that once existed. Remember this, Paul: Anguillians pride themselves on good manners — Anguillians don’t pass people straight!
