UK to Slam the Door on Visa-Free Travel Without ETA by 2026

From 25 February 2026, visitors from 85 visa-free nationalities — including the United States, Canada and France — will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the UK. This marks a significant shift: whereas these travellers could previously enter with only a passport, they will soon need digital permission. Airlines will check their ETA before boarding, supporting the government’s push for a fully contactless, digitised border.

From February 2026, travellers with an ETA can take unlimited trips to the UK for two years — even last-minute weekend flights count, as long as the ETA is linked to the same passport.

Minister for Migration and Citizenship Mike Tapp insists the system strengthens national security while delivering convenience: “ETAs give us greater power to stop those who pose a threat from setting foot in the country and gives us a fuller picture of immigration. Digitising the immigration system ensures the millions of people we welcome to the UK every year enjoy a more seamless travel experience.”

The government argues this system enhances security and improves travel. ETA applications cost £16 and can be made via the official UK ETA app or on the GOV.UK website. Most decisions are automatic within minutes, but applicants are advised to allow up to three working days in case extra checks are needed. Once approved, the ETA is linked to the traveller’s passport and remains valid for two years — or until the passport expires.

British and Irish citizens are exempt, but dual British nationals are strongly encouraged to use a valid British passport to avoid denial of boarding. While ETA pre-authorises entry, it does not guarantee it — border officers may still refuse entry under visitor rules if they are not satisfied with the visitor’s intentions.

To apply, travellers need a valid passport, a recent photo, an email address, and a payment method (credit/debit card or Apple/Google Pay). The easiest route is via the UK ETA app on a smartphone, where you scan your passport and take a selfie. Alternatively, you can apply via the GOV.UK website, but you must use the same passport to travel as you used to apply. Click here for official government announcement.
