After Hurricane Melissa: A Call for Jamaica’s Stars to Stand Up for Their Fans

In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, Jamaica is reeling. Entire communities have been left in ruins, homes flattened, roads destroyed, and countless families displaced. From Portland to Clarendon, Kingston to St. Mary, the island carries the deep scars of one of the most devastating storms in recent memory. Yet even as the rain subsides and the floodwaters begin to recede, one truth remains clear — Jamaica’s greatest strength has always been its people. And right now, those people need help more than ever. This is a call, not to the government or to politicians, but to the sons and daughters of Jamaica who have risen to fame and fortune. To the entertainers, influencers, athletes, and public figures — both at home and abroad — the time has come to stand up for your fans. These are the same people who streamed your music day and night, who wore your brand, who shared your posts, who prayed for you when you were just starting out. Gabrielle Gathers Strength: Will Become Second Hurricane of the Season

Tropical Storm Gabrielle

As of Sunday, Tropical Storm Gabrielle is intensifying over the Atlantic and is expected to become a hurricane within hours. With sustained winds already reaching 65 mph, forecasters predict Gabrielle could strengthen into a Category 2 storm, packing winds up to 100 mph.

🌀 Projected Path

Gabrielle is currently located about 455 miles southeast of Bermuda and is tracking north-northwest at 9 mph. The National Hurricane Center expects the storm to pass east of Bermuda on Monday, then curve northeast by Tuesday. While Gabrielle is forecast to remain over open waters, its trajectory could shift — and even distant storms can have serious ripple effects.

⚠️ Potential Dangers

  • Life-threatening surf and rip currents: Swells generated by Gabrielle are already reaching the East Coast from North Carolina to Atlantic Canada. These conditions are expected to persist into early next week.
  • Storm-force winds: Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles from Gabrielle’s centre, posing risks to vessels and coastal infrastructure.
  • Supply chain and travel disruptions: Even without landfall, Gabrielle could impact shipping routes, flights, and emergency logistics across the Caribbean and south-eastern U.S.

While Gabrielle’s core is expected to remain offshore, outer rainbands could still brush parts of the north-eastern Caribbean. Islands like St. Martin, St. Maarten, Anguilla, and Jamaica may experience brief periods of heavy rain and gusty winds, especially if the storm’s path shifts westward.

Localised flooding in low-lying areas is possible, and residents are urged to monitor updates from their national meteorological services. Even without direct impact, tropical systems can disrupt travel, saturate soil, and trigger flash floods — so caution is key.

Gabrielle is a reminder that nature doesn’t wait for us to be ready. Let’s be proactive, not reactive. If you’ve lived through storms before, your experience matters — share it. If you’re new to hurricane season, ask questions. And if you’re safe and able, reach out. Solidarity saves lives.
