After Hurricane Melissa: A Call for Jamaica’s Stars to Stand Up for Their Fans

From Portland to Clarendon, Kingston to St. Mary, the island carries the deep scars of one of the most devastating storms in recent memory. Yet even as the rain subsides and the floodwaters begin to recede, one truth remains clear — Jamaica’s greatest strength has always been its people. And right now, those people need help more than ever. This is a call, not to the government or to politicians, but to the sons and daughters of Jamaica who have risen to fame and fortune. To the entertainers, influencers, athletes, and public figures — both at home and abroad — the time has come to stand up for your fans. Tropical Storm Melissa Could Become Hurricane – Haiti and Jamaica on High Alert

Tropical Storm Melissa is currently churning in the Caribbean Sea, with its center located roughly 325 miles south-southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. As of the latest advisory, Melissa is packing sustained winds of 50 mph and moving westward at 12 mph. The Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is actively investigating the system, which is expected to gradually intensify over the coming days.

Melissa's Current Movement

Tropical-storm-force winds already extend outward up to 140 miles from the center, and Melissa’s minimum central pressure sits at 1003 mb. The storm’s projected path suggests a slow turn northwestward, placing Jamaica and southwestern Haiti directly in its sights later this week.

⚠️ Watches have been issued across the region: a Hurricane Watch is now in effect for Haiti’s southwestern peninsula, while Jamaica is under a Tropical Storm Watch. These alerts mean that conditions could deteriorate within 48 hours, and residents should begin preparations immediately. Interests in the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Aruba are also advised to monitor updates closely.

Melissa’s rainfall potential is significant—southern Haiti and the Dominican Republic could see 5 to 10 inches, with eastern Jamaica expecting up to 8 inches. Northern portions of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico may receive 1 to 4 inches. Flash flooding and landslides are a real concern, especially in mountainous terrain and urban areas.

Here we have other systems developing that we should be keeping on eye on.

🌊 Beyond wind and rain, Melissa is generating powerful swells that will impact coastlines across Hispaniola, Jamaica, and eastern Cuba. These waves could lead to dangerous surf and rip currents, so beachgoers and boaters should exercise extreme caution.

While the UK remains far from the storm’s reach, British nationals in the Caribbean should stay informed via local meteorological services. As Melissa continues to evolve, we’ll keep tracking its progress and provide timely updates. Stay safe, stay alert, and keep an eye on the skies.
